MARTEN REFSLUND POULSEN REMEMBERS
PERSONAL AND FOLK LIFE PORTRAITS
FROM NORTH SLESVIG
Marten Refslund Poulsen is a captivating storyteller. With a memory that is not a little reminiscent of the old saga tellers, in his memories from the Bovlund region in the latter half of the 19th century he describes his southern Jutland homeland and the diversity of personalities and destinies of its families, and in doing so he provides an extremely valuable and vivid cultural picture of the old Danish region under foreign rule. During this time, North Schleswig was still in the shadow of Section 5. In the hope of its fulfillment, several thousand young southern Jutland residents had emigrated to evade German military service, and the region had become poor in male youth, capital and enterprise.
