Preface

In this atlas I have traced the history of Arab-Jewish conflict from the turn of the century to the present day. I have tried to show something of the increasing intensity and bitterness of the conflict, of the types of incidents which it provoked, and of the views of those involved in it.

The majority of the maps in this atlas depict wars, conflict and violence. which have brought terrible suffering to all those caught up in them – Jew and Arab, soldier and civilian, adult and child. But there are also maps which show the various attempts to bring the conflict to an end, through proposals for agreed boundaries, through the signing of cease-fire agree-ments, and through negotiations. No map can show how peace will come. but they do show how much it is needed.

I am extremely grateful to Mr T.A. Bicknell, the cartographer, whose expertise has been invaluable, and who has dealt patiently with my many demands and amendments. I am also grateful to the many people who have provided me with factual material, who have scrutinized my drafts while they were being prepared, and who have given me the benefit of their professional knowledge and guidance. I should of course be grateful for readers suggestions for further maps, for extra material, and for corrections.
